Extra Points …
Starters revealed: Browns coach Rob Chudzinski not only named Brandon Weeden his starting quarterback on Tuesday, he indirectly made official most of the other starters on his team.
Chudzinski said the players who start the third preseason game in Indianapolis on Saturday are the expected starters for, at least, the season opener Sept. 8 against Miami “with the exception of right guard, (right) corner and the kicker and punter positions.”
Based on those comments and the most recent team depth chart released for the Colts game, we can make these assumptions:
* Chris Ogbonnaya is the fullback.
* Tashaun Gipson is the free safety.
Although Josh Gordon is listed as a starting wide receiver, he is suspended for the first two regular games. His replacement may be revealed in Indianapolis. It should be Travis Benjamin, based on practice reps.
As for the positions still up for grabs, Buster Skrine and Chris Owens are listed at co-starters at right corner, Shayne Graham and Brandon Bogotay are the same at kicker and T.J. Conley and Spencer Lanning ditto at punter. The right guard position is between Garrett Gilkey, newly acquired John Moffitt and Oniel Cousins, Chudzinski said.
Mingo update: Nobody seems overly concerned with the fact that Barkevious Mingo’s mysterious bruised lung injury can not be pinpointed to any traumatic hit on the field.
“It is really irrelevant at this point of when it happened,” Chudzinski said. “There is still uncertainty on that. We are just waiting (for him to return). Everybody’s body heals differently and at a different rate. It is just what we are waiting on to see.”
Chudzinski had no update on results of medical tests on Mingo. Mingo watched Tuesday’s practice from the sideline.
Off guard: Shawn Lauvao is still using a crutch to support his left leg in a walking boot. He suffered a high ankle sprain on Aug. 5, and also had surgery to clean out some “loose bodies.” Lauvao said he had the surgery 10 days ago and is taking his recovery “day by day.” … Jason Pinkston also is wearing a walking boot on his right leg after suffering his high ankle sprain in the Detroit game on Aug. 15.
