(CLEVELAND) - With designated hitter Travis Hafner now on the shelf for four-to-six weeks (athroscopic knee surgery) and catcher Carlos Santana and third-baseman Jack Hannahan also on the DL, manager Manny Acta is forced to piece together some form of a major league lineup.
After a 6-3 loss to the Royals Wednesday, Acta said they have a lot to consider.
The Tribe skipper said they would “go over” a few of their options regarding possibly making a move to “see what is best for our club.”
Could those options include first-baseman / outfielder Matt LaPorta (.304 – 14 HR – 30 RBI), who is currently with the Class-AAA Columbus Clippers?
“Everybody on the triple-A roster is an option,” Acta said. “But first, we have to make that decision (if we will be calling anyone up).”
Despite LaPorta's good overall numbers, he has struggled lately. In his last 10 games, he is hitting .188 with two home runs and five RBI.
Another potential option - infielder / outfielder Russ Canzler - is hitting .266 with three home runs and 15 RBI with Columbus. He is hitting .270 in his previous 10 games.
Certainly, the club could use the help. But is it the type of help that either LaPorta or Canzler could provide? That is highly debatable. Neither can fill the shoes of a healthy - or even less than healthy Hafner in the middle of the order.
Cleveland receives a much needed off day Thursday. Friday, they open a three-game series with the Twins at Progressive Field.
