Tony Grossi's Mock Draft 5.0: Stunning development at No. 4 for Browns

Mar 21, 2014 -- 6:00am

The Browns’ new football operations chiefs GM Ray Farmer and coach Mike Pettine have been unorthodox, to say the least, in the way they have scouted quarterbacks.

They didn’t interview any of the top prospects at the Combine.

They shunned the pro days of Teddy Bridgewater and Blake Bortles (Johnny Manziel’s pro day is March 27).

And they refused to say why.

Are they being overly coy? Are they being derelict? Or have they simply moved beyond taking a quarterback in the first round of the draft?

Our mock draft 5.0 agrees with the last point.

1. Houston: QB Blake Bortles, Central Florida

His pro day workout secured the top spot.

2. St. Louis: DE Jadeveon Clowney, South Carolina

It’s becoming obvious the Rams would love to trade down.

3. Jacksonville: QB Johnny Manziel, Texas A&M

No way they take an OT two years in a row, right?

4. Cleveland: OT-OG Greg Robinson, Auburn

Future franchise tackle, present franchise guard?

5. Oakland: WR Sammy Watkins, Clemson

Raiders’ starting QB will come from free agency.

6. Atlanta: LB Khalil Mack, Buffalo

Another addition to a revamped defensive front seven.

7. Tampa Bay: WR Mike Evans, Texas A&M

Teams with Vincent Jackson to give new QB Josh McCown a dual threat.

8. Minnesota: QB Derek Carr, Fresno State

Displaces Bridgewater as the No. 3 QB in the draft.

9. Buffalo: OT Jake Matthews, Texas A&M

Head coach Doug Marrone is a former O-line coach, remember.

10. Detroit: CB Darqueze Dennard, Michigan State

Don’t overthink it.

11. Tennessee: LB Anthony Barr, UCLA

Defensive coordinator Ray Horton starts a new rebuilding project.

12. N.Y. Giants: OT Taylor Lewan, Michigan

Eli Manning really needs this pick.

13. St. Louis: WR Marqise Lee, Southern California

Help the quarterback, Rams.

14. Chicago: S Calvin Pryor, Louisville

Free agency focused on the front seven.

15. Pittsburgh: WR Odell Beckham, Louisiana State

Big Ben needs somebody to throw to besides Antonio Brown.

16. Dallas: DT Aaron Donald, Pittsburgh

Best available, meet biggest need.

17. Baltimore: S Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, Alabama

Signing of Steve Smith clinches defensive choice here.

18. NY Jets: TE Eric Ebron, North Carolina

This would be a great pickup for Geno Smith.

19. Miami: LB C.J. Mosley, Alabama

Dolphins need help at this position.

20. Arizona: DE Kony Ealy, Missouri

Cardinals roster is pretty darn competitive.

21. Green Bay: DT Louis Nix, Notre Dame

Need + best available = bulls-eye.

22. Philadelphia: CB Justin Gilbert, Oklahoma State

Eagles wouldn’t have to rush him in.

23. Kansas City: WR Kelvin Benjamin, Florida State

Is he too tall for Andy Reid?

24. Cincinnati: DE Dee Ford, Auburn

I keep coming back to this pick.

25. San Diego: CB Bradley Roby, Ohio State

Another need pick falls in line.

26. Cleveland: LB Ryan Shazier, Ohio State

For the second week in a row, the Buckeye is the choice.
