The swelling and soreness in Trent Richardson’s left knee will result in arthroscopic surgery on Thursday, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported.

Mortensen’s sources told him the surgery, to be performed by noted sports surgeon Dr. James Andrews, would remove a “loose particle” that is irritating the knee. The injury, per Mortensen, is unrelated to surgery Richardson had on Feb. 3 to repair a torn meniscus cartilage.

Andrews performed the surgery on Feb. 3 and also did surgeries to repair a torn ligament on both of Richardson’s ankles during his freshman and sophomore years at Escambia High School in Pensacola, Fla.

Mortensen's sources described the recovery period as "a two-week deal" and he is expected to be fully recovered for the Browns season-opener on Sept. 9. Mortensen reported that Richardson might be available to play in one or two preseason games, but that would be up to the Browns.

The rookie running back experienced soreness and swelling in the knee and was held out of practice on Monday. After having an MRI on the knee, Richardson departed for Birmingham, Ala., on Wednesday morning.

Andrews also repaired torn ligaments in both of Richardson’s ankles during his freshman and sophomore years at Escambia High School in Pensacola, Fla. Richardson recovered faster and stronger from those surgeries and went on to win state and regional track competitions.

Richardson’s only injury of note at University of Alabama occurred in his final game, the BCS Championship victory over Louisiana State. That resulted in the surgery to repair the small cartilage

Prior to the team’s practice Wednesday in Cleveland Browns Stadium, Browns coach Pat Shurmur said in a statement: “Trent Richardson is traveling to Pensacola, Fla., where he will have his left knee further evaluated by Dr. James Andrews tomorrow.”
